No matter what the mould pouring and feeding application is, the only way to get the metal into the foundry mould (Whatever type it is) is via a down sprue – Runner – Ingate – and the riser, which takes care of the feeding of the casting as it cools.
A basic casting shape can be fed simply by cutting a channel from the down sprue to the mould cavity in the sand mould, but if the pattern or multiple patterns are to be fed correctly, proper runners and in-gates are required to control the steady inflow of molten metal.
The correct feeding of castings can be complex and difficult at times.
Incorrect Feed Rate Of Molten Metal Can Cause Some Or All The Following:
- Insufficient filling of mould cavity.
- Ingates can freeze.
- Sand wash within the mould.
- Hot tears will occur in the casting.
- Cold shut will occur.
There are always plenty of foundry questions to ask, such as:
- How do I know where to place the ingate or feeder
- I am not sure where the best spot for the riser is
- Can the riser neck be made too narrow.
- Is there a formula for correct in-gate size – (Answer-yes)
And on and on the questions will go.
But, if you are a well informed hobby caster, you’ll be aware of the pitfalls if armed with the correct knowledge and info.
The Design Of Gates And Risers book will provide in spades, the kind of information required to help produce successful metal casting, and explain in full how to prevent 98% of the problems that may occur with casting work.
To be honest, most foundry work is straight forward, but every now and again, a curly problem will appear which may baffle you, and it’s been known that problems can at times be traced back to the runners-gates-risers.
This book is just like having an expert by your side. In fact the information in this book was written by an old time foundry expert, who spent the majority of his life in the foundry.
Gates and risers book can be purchased with the complete Hobby Foundry Knowledge Toolkit package of ebooks that we offer, but for now, just like the Pattern Making workshop Practice ebook, it can also be purchased as a stand alone item.
